Updating custom hill without losing records

Hello!
I am currently working on my first fictional ski jumping hill and I wonder, how can I change a few visual elements, that doesnt affect the hill profile, without losing my record data every single time. Thank you in advance for your answers and I really hope that there is a possibility to do that! Versions maybe?
