sharp surface on 3dmodel

I'm struggling with one 3dmodel which have a smooth part with transition angle of 90. Even with well divided surface, on certain angle surface faces have much different colour on different angle. It's probably calculated by scalar product between face's normals and light vector. But is there a way to smoothen this surface instead of dividing the model by even more vertices/faces? Maybe it's possible by seams? And if so, how?
