The hill in planica has 130 meters in hight from the jump to the "bottom" of the hill.
(this is the maximum according to FIS regulations)
Vikersund is working towards FIS to get 134-135 meters, that means that jumping around 250 meters is possible.
This is difficult in the current hill in planica.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Department of Culture has granted NOK 23 million to the planned renovation and expansion of the Norwegian skiflying arena at Vikersund, a project estimated to cost NOK 70 million.
The planned expansion will make the Vikersund the largest skiflying hill in the world, and will compete with Planica for the record lengths, according to the head of the Vikersund Arena, Willy Holseter.

Why do you say that?
If the hill is buildt in a way that make a jumper jump 300meters in a safe way, why is this a bad thing?

Humans will always want to push the limits nomather what.
It's in our genes:)

If the FIS allowed more than 130 meters, guess what would instantly happen in Planica? :wink:

Didn't they say in Vikersund that the wordl record could possibly be beaten last year? Schlierenzauer crashed and burned at less than 230 meters. There's some serious daydreaming going on in Norway. Vikersund is similar to Oberstdorf, I'd say. So it's one of the 3 biggest hills in the world. That's good enough. Planica will always be number 1. It's part of skijumping tradition ...

300m will be impossible, the inrun speed would be to high and the forces on the jumper in the air woul be uncalculatable. There are physical limits and i dont want to see them tested at human beings.
Even today we saw jumps where jumpers had really trouble in the air with an inrun speed of 102km/h. and i am talking about top ten jumpers in the world.

I'm sure that similar things had been said before Beamon stunned the world back in 1968...

300m ARE possible, you don´t need a higher inrun speed to jump that far...
( K120---> Inrun speed: ca 92 km/h
K185---> Inrun speed: ca 103 km/h
Speed difference: ca 10-11 km/h
Cavity difference: about 100 m )
the hill just has to be constructed the right way and the material (skis, suits) has to be imroved too. if the hill is very arduous then it´s possible to jump 300m without endangering the jumper. of course during the flight it should not be posseble to get higher than maybe 5m or stuff like that....
