The knockout system does not make much sense if there are less than 50 players participating (especially odd number of players).

If there are an odd number of players, the system would just use a specific distance for players to move on to the next round. For example, on the Garmisch-Partenkirchen HS140, say the specific distance is 126.5m, all the players who did not jump to this distance or further would be knocked out. The cut distance would be chosen regarding the number of competitors to cut the field in half. This is how I have seen it done in real life.

Maybe you can do something like this:

1. QUALIFICATION

a) > 50 jumpers

Normal q like in the 4HT

b) < 50 jumpers (odd number of players)

The worst jumper would not qualify

c) < 50 jumpers (even number of players)

Qualification round is just a training.

2. I round

a) 30 jumpers or less

All of the players advance to the second round

b) more than 30 but less than 50 jumpers

When you have 32 jumpers, 16 jumpers promote to the second round by winning their pairs and 14 jumpers advance by being a lucky looser. When there are 34 jumpers 17 and 13 jumpers promote etc...

c) 50 jumpers

Just like in the normal 4HT competition :D.

Works in principle, but this is already quite different from the original rules and might be too confusing.

I'm planning to implement the KO-system and was thinking about the custom rules when there are less than 50 jumpers in the qualification.

Second approach in case of odd number of jumpers (case b) would be that the worst jumper advances to the 1st round but he jumps there without a pair being an automatic loser. He could, however, advance to the 2nd round if he was among the lucky losers.

For example if there were 35 jumpers in the qualification round the pairs on the 2nd round would be:

18th vs 17th
19th vs 16th
...
33th vs 2nd
34th vs 1st
35th (no pair, automatic loser)

One problem in this approach is that a prequalified jumper who skips the qualification (= jumps 0 meters) and wants to challenge the best jumper from the qualification round would lose this chance because he would jump without a pair on the first round. Or maybe the jumper with no pair should be the worst jumper who is not prequalified?

The biggest advantage of this approach is that it scales well with any number of jumpers between 1-50. It does not make any sense to drop the odd jumper from the 1st round if there are less than 30 jumpers on the qualification round.

What's your opinion?

The main question is if this 35th jumper should qualify for the first round like I suggested.

how about that, the 35th jumper needs a certain percantage of the points of the leader after the first round :)

Then it could be in some cases easier to qualify for the 2nd round than being a normal lucky loser. I smell abuse...
And we want 30 jumpers for the 2nd round, not 31. I think that it's reasonable to offer him the possibility to advance only by being among the best lucky losers.

Jussi, I (and sure all other offline players) hope that you will implement this really good idea in the offline World Cup too.

For example in:

Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Oberstdorf
Bischofshofen
Bad Mitterndorf
