Number of hills on Weekly Online Tournaments (Poll closed)

Post by Jussi Koskela »

Thanks to additional 3rd party custom hills we now have an option to compete in longer Weekly Online Tournaments than earlier (24 hills).
The system supports random selection of hills, so we can freely choose how long the tournaments take even if the pool of world cup hills is larger.
It's also possible to mark some hills as important, so that they will always be chosen for the world cup.

Please vote!

16 official + 16 custom (if 32) would be great :)

It would also be nice to switch the old hills with their updated versions (f.e. new Planica, Oberstdorf, Bad Mitterndorf etc.) in WOT. Judging by the current results of the vote 32 hills is gonna win, so the suggestion above makes absolute sense: 16 new and 16 old, "official" hills.

Why though? There are 53 custom Real hills compared to 24 Jussi's, so I think the proportion should be adjusted accordingly. It doesn't even need to be exact, since we will have random draws.

But even with 32 competitions the Hill Pool will be larger than 32

Remember that DSJ Online has an option to define important hills which will be jumped always. This would allow us to divide hills set to 2 categories:

[1, primary] important hills that are always picked for tournaments (we could use it for hills currently/frequently used in World Cup, World Championships, Flying Hills, Winter Olympics, Summer Grand Prix, etc).
[2, secondary] less important real hills (especially smaller and less popular hills; only normal+large?) that will be picked randomly; this pool can have more hills than [1].

Both pools would contain official and third-party hills.

For example, in case if 32 hills option wins, we can have 16 hills that are picked for every WOT + 16 random hills taken from secondary pool (primary/secondary ratio can be adjusted in the future). I think this would bring more variety of hills on WOTs, but still having a reasonable number of well known hills. Of course, the secondary pool should be not too big and not include small hills (medium as well I think).

Additionally, the primary pool doesn't have to be permanently fixed. It would be nice if some hills were replaced after/before seasons. For example, we could include hills from Summer Grand Prix (Courchevel, Einsiedeln, etc.) as primary for competitions taking place off season and non-flying hills that allow ski jumping only during Winter would be dropped to secondary pool.

As we have had Bischofshofen78 for a long time, i think we should have a few spots for medium hills :)

In first category I think we should use the most important hills from IRL World Cup:
- Ski Flying Hills (4 or 5 hills with Harrachov because there are only 5 flying hills)
- 4 Hills Tournament's Hills
- Raw Air Hills
+ additionally Hills used in World Cup almost every season

Those first 3 types of hills would give us 10/11 hills- Planica HS240, Vikersund HS240, Oberstdorf HS235, Bad Mitterndorf HS235 (+ Harrachov HS205 additionally), Oberstdorf HS137, Ga-Pa HS140, Innsbruck HS128, Bischofshofen HS140, Lillehammer HS138 and Trondheim HS138. We can also add hills from the 4th type but it would give us about 20 hills total which is a bit too much imo - Wisła HS134, Kuusamo HS142, Engelberg HS140, Titisee-Neustadt HS142, Zakopane HS140, Lahti HS130, Willingen HS145, Sapporo HS134, and Rasnov HS97 (so we have at least one normal hill certain).

I think that more random hills = more interesting and entertaining tournaments, but that's only my personal opinion.
