Ski Jumpers seasonal packs based on their performance

Post by Bartimozo »

Hello everyone,
Since 10 years during every season I'm making simple rankings basing on ski jumpers results. Recently I returned to playing in DSJ4 and I thought it would be nice to use these rankings to create packs of jumpers.
I'm going to post in this thread packs for all seasons I made rankings so far. I had started in 2011/2012 season, but in free time I'm completing ranking for previous years. Currently I have completed rankings up to and including 1998/1999 season. And I'm still working to progress them.
In the post below I will explain the rules of the rankings and the rules for creating jumper packs.

My plan is to share in this post new pack once a week starting with previous season. So enjoy :D

Rules for creating jumper packs:
#1. Maximum 7 jumpers from each classified country.
#2. There is limited amount of places, which is 100.
#3. If the best jumper from a given country doesn't make it into the TOP100 then given country gets one and only place as if beyond the TOP100. We can call them "country representatives"
#4. If for example Italy has 5 jumpers, which fits into TOP100, 6th & 7th place from this country will not be included (that's why #1 is maximum 7 jumpers).
5. The best jumper in gained points during season has 1600 in-game skill level
6. Each subsequent jumper has skill level 10 less
7. Exception for #6 is when two or more jumpers has the same number of points - then they will have the same skill level.
8. Following #5, #6, #7 theoretically jumper at 100th place should have 610 skill level, but due to sometimes ex aequo places their level could raise and "country representatives" could also have higher skill levels than predefined, by previous rules level 600.

And finally the biggest thing to explain - how my rankings work?
Well, we need to divide it to two periods - before and after the appearance of the FIS Cup cycle (before 2005/2006 and 2005/2006-now)
Let's start with current rankings method.
In sequence (place-points)

INDIVIDUAL Competitions
Olympic Winter Games (1-100, 2-98, 3-96, 4-94,...,29-44, 30-42, 31-40, 32-39, 33-38, 34-37,..., 49-22, 50-21) (Additionally, each appointed for Olympics jumper is awarded 4 points for appointment)
World Ski Championships (1-90, 2-88, 3-86, 4-84,...,19-54, 20-52, 21-50, 22-49, 23-48,...,49-22,50-21) (Additionally, each appointed for the WSC jumper is awarded 3 points for appointment)
World Ski Flying Championships (1-80, 2-78, 3-76,...,9-62, 10-60, 11-59, 12-58,...,39-32, 40-31) (Additionally, each appointed for the WSFC jumper is awarded 3 points for appointment)
World Cup competition (1-70, 2-69, 3-68, 4-67, 5-66,...,49-22, 50-21) (Additionally, each appointed for specific hill WC competition jumper is awarded 2 points for appointment)
Continental Cup/ World Ski Junior Championships/ Winter Universiade (1-50, 2-49, 3-48, 4-47,...,49-2, 50-1, 51-0 and so on) (Additionally, each appointed for specific hill CoC competition and whole WJSC/UVS competition jumper is awarded 1 point for appointment)
FIS Cup/ Youth Olympic Games/ Asian Winter Olympic Games (1-30, 2-29, 3-28,...,29-2, 30-1, 31-0 and so on) (Additionally, each appointed for specific hill FCu competition and whole YOG/AWOG competition jumper is awarded 0 points for appointment - to be classified)
European Youth Olympic Festival/ Alpen Cup (1-15, 2-14, 3-13,.., 14-2, 15-1, 16-0 and so on) (Additionally, each appointed for EYOF is awarded 0 points for appointment - to be classified, and places 16-30 from Alpen Cup are awarded 0 points - to be classified)
Carpathian Cup (1-8, 2-7,...,7-2, 8-1 and so on) - (additionally places 9-15 are awarded 0 points - to be classified)

TEAM competitions
OWG/WSC/WSFC/WC competition (1-60, 2-52, 3-44, 4-36, 5-28, 6-20, 7-16, 8-12, 9-8, 10-6, 11-4, 12-3, 13-2, 14-1) (Each point value is for single jumper)
WJSC/UVS competition (1-30, 2-26, 3-22, 4-18, 5-14, 6-10, 7-8, 8-6, 9-4, 10-3, 11-2, 12-1) (Each point value is for single jumper)
YOG/EYOF/AWOG competition (1-12, 2-10, 3-8, 4-6, 5-4, 6-3, 7-2, 8-1) (Each point value is for single jumper)

QUALIFYING/ PROLOGUES
OWG/WSC/WSFC/WC (1-15, 2-14, 3-13,...,14-2, 15-1) and (51-20, 52-19, 53-18,...,68-3, 69-2, 70-1, 71-0 and so on)

TRAINING ROUNDS
OWG/WSC/WSFC/WC (1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5, 5-4, 6-3, 7-2, 8-1)
CoC/WJSC/UVS (1-5, 2-4, 3-3, 4-2, 5-1)
FCu/YOG (1-3, 2-2, 3-1)

RANKING METHODS up to 2005/2006 (pre-FIS Cup period) (This will be used since Continental Cup will be held)

INDIVIDUAL competitions
WOG/WSC/WSFC/WC points format does not change
WSJC/UVS points format does not change
AWOG points format does not change
EYOF/Alpen Cup points format does not change
The big changes is in calculating the Continental Cup competitions. It is divided in three ways depending on number of starting jumpers (#1 is for above 70 jumpers, #2 is between 51-70 jumpers, #3 is for 50 or less jumpers)
1 point for appointment does not change
#1 (1-50, 2-49, 3-48,...29-22, 30-21, 31&32 - 20, 33&34 - 19, 35&36 - 18,..., 67&68 - 2, 69&70 - 1, 71 and below - 0) (As you can see from 31st place two jumpers acquire same number of points - this is partially compensation for the missing FIS Cup points)
#2 is just regular Continental Cup scoring system currently used
#3 depends on number of jumpers participating in competition (Take, for example,a competition with 46 jumpers on list - in this competition, the winning jumper will acquire 46 points for win, 45 points is for 2nd place and so on up to 46th place, which gain 1 point for his performance)

In TEAM Competitions there are no changes (If Team competition is within Continental Cup, points are awarded as in Team competition in WJSC or UVS in current method.

QUALIFYING
WOG/WSC/WSFC/WC points format does not change
CoC used to conduct qualifyings before starting FIS Cup cycle, so I need to include them in rankings. Scoring system is (1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5, 5-4, 6-3, 7-2, 8-1) (Points for unqualified jumpers are included in regular CoC competition scoring points described above).

TRAINING Points does not change

Because of release of 1.10 version od DSJ4, I would want to share 2016/2017 season jumpers pack as bonus for new version release. Enjoy new pack :)

I also decided to share a little preview in commentary of the every new shared pack.
In fact 2016/2017 season was really interesting season - Kraft and Stoch was fighting for Crystal Globe almost until last competitions. Kraft then won his first Globe, Stoch won his first FHT, Poland team has strong comeback after weak 2015/2016 season. Domen Prevc debuted in World Cup in impressive way. During competition in Vikersund we we have witnessed the breaking of world records by Robert Johansson and Stefan Kraft. Kraft won both individual competitions in World Ski Championships in Lahti, where Poland NT also won their first WSC gold medals in history. All these events affected my rankings, which results best lifetime performances for jumpers like Andreas Wellinger (GER), Maciej Kot (POL), Manuel Fettner (AUT), Vincent Descombes Sevoie (FRA), Felix Hoffmann (GER) and many more.

I also decided to share in preview countries best rated jumpers in season based on my rankings

Moving onto the next season, it's time for 2015/16. We had one dominator during this season - it was Peter Prevc. During this season he won 15 (of his 23 career wins) competitions, which results broke then current record held by Gregor Schlierenzauer with 13 wins. Also he had the most podiums during single season with 22 podiums (also beats Schlierenzauer's record - 20). It was redemption season for Slovenian after incredible finish of 14/15 season. What's more? Kenneth Gangnes he returned to jumping at an highest level after several injuries. The only one Championship competition this season was Ski Flying Championships, which won Peter Prevc. Right behind him was Kenneth Gangnes and Stefan Kraft. Team competition has been dominated by Norwegians (they won against second Germany with 110,4 points advantage). All these events affected my rankings, which results best (as now) lifetime performances for jumpers like Kenneth Gangnes, Johann Andre Forfang or Joachim Hauer. It is also final season in my packs for jumpers like: Kenneth Gangnes (NOR), Robert Kranjec (SLO), Joachim Hauer (NOR), Tom Hilde (NOR), Jaka Hvala (SLO) or Shohei Tochimoto (JPN)

In this season best country jumpers will have ratings:
SLOVENIA - Peter Prevc - 1600
NORWAY - Kenneth Gangnes - 1590
GERMANY - Severin Freund - 1580
AUSTRIA - Michael Hayboeck - 1560
CZECHIA - Roman Koudelka - 1510
JAPAN - Noriaki Kasai - 1500
SWITZERLAND - Simon Ammann - 1480
POLAND - Dawid Kubacki - 1440
FRANCE - Vincent Descombes Sevoie - 1280
CANADA - Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes - 1230
RUSSIA - Denis Kornilov - 1130
UNITED STATES - Michael Glasder - 1070
FINLAND - Ville Larinto - 1060
ITALY - Sebastian Colloredo - 1040
KAZAKHSTAN - Radik Zhaparov - 970
BULGARIA - Vladimir Zografski - 930
SOUTH KOREA - Heung Chul-Choi - 910
ESTONIA - Martti Nomme - 810
ROMANIA - Eduard Torok - 780
TURKEY - Muhammet Irfan Cintimar - 710

Next Monday, next season package is shared :). It was historic season. Firstly the first time ever someone flight over 250m on ski jumping hill. Peter Prevc has made this in Vikersund. What's curious during next day competition Anders Fannemel broke this record and landed at 251,5 meters. We have also unbelievable finish of the World Cup season. Peter Prevc and Severin Freund gained exactly the same number of points during whole season and Crystal Globe goes for German, because he won more competitions than Slovenian. As curio I can add that we have iconic ex-aequo 1st place at Ruka competition where Simon Ammann and Noriaki Kasai had won their last competitions by now. In this season FHT won Stefan Kraft. We have World Ski Championships during this season, which won Rune Velta on normal hill and Severin Freund on big hill. Team competition has been won by Norwegians. According to my rankings it was best season of lifetime for Severin Freund, Rune Velta, Nejc Dezman or Jarkko Maatta. It is worth adding that this season the largest number of different national teams in history were presented.

In this season best country jumpers will have ratings:
GERMANY - Severin Freund - 1600
SLOVENIA - Peter Prevc - 1590
AUSTRIA - Stefan Kraft - 1580
NORWAY - Rune Velta - 1560
JAPAN - Noriaki Kasai - 1540
POLAND - Piotr Żyła - 1530
CZECHIA - Roman Koudelka - 1480
SWITZERLAND - Gregor Deschwanden - 1390
FINLAND - Jarkko Maatta - 1290
FRANCE - Vincent Descombes Sevoie - 1230
RUSSIA - Dmitriy Vassiliev - 1170
BULGARIA - Vladimir Zografski - 1090
ITALY - Davide Bresadola - 1060
UNITED STATES - Michael Glasder - 960
SOUTH KOREA - Seou Choi - 890

With small delay I want to share with you 2013/2014 season ski jumpers pack. Personally I remembered this season mostly because of Kamil Stoch's double Olympics gold and his really strong season finish, which gave him overall World Cup victory. We have probably the last Ski Flying World Championships held on Certak in Harrachov. Surprisingly FHT was won by Thomas Diethart, which has been followed by his really great performance during rest of the season. Well known Thomas Morgenstern suffered two really dramatic crashes - one in Titisee-Neustadt and one on Kulm, which completely change his career. Severin Freund won SFWC, team winner hasn't been decided, because of cancellation of team competition. Gold medals in teams in Olympics won Germany team.

In this season best country jumpers will have ratings:
SLOVENIA - Peter Prevc - 1600
POLAND - Kamil Stoch - 1590
GERMANY - Severin Freund - 1580
AUSTRIA - Gregor Schlierenzauer - 1570
NORWAY - Anders Bardal - 1560
JAPAN - Noriaki Kasai - 1550
SWITZERLAND - Simon Ammann - 1480
CZECHIA - Jan Matura - 1450
FINLAND - Anssi Koivuranta - 1270
CANADA - Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes - 1140
FRANCE - Ronan Lamy Chappuis - 1100
RUSSIA - Denis Kornilov - 1090
ITALY - Davide Bresadola - 1030
ESTONIA - Kaarel Nurmsalu - 960
SOUTH KOREA - Hyun-Ki Kim - 910
UNITED STATES - Nicholas Fairall - 900
ROMANIA - Eduard Torok - 890
BULGARIA - Vladimir Zografski - 860
SLOVAKIA - Tomas Zmoray - 790
GREECE - Nico Polichronidis - 730
KAZAKHSTAN - Marat Zhaparov - 710
TURKEY - Samet Karta - 690
SWEDEN - Carl Nordin - 640
NETHERLANDS - Oldrik van der Aalst - 630
UKRAINE - Andrii Klymchuk - 620
BELARUS - Yauheny Mytskanuk - 610

Yes, but recently I had enormous amount of work on university, so I don't have time for creating packs. Shortly after finishing it I will create and upload new packs. Also my rankings has been expanded, so now I will be able to create pack at least until Continental Cup creation.

After long break the newest pack of jumpers is released! During this season we had first ever mixed team event held in Lillehammer, which the Norwegians won. Gregor Schlierenzauer won his latest overall World Cup. We have last edition of FIS Team Tour during this season and debut of Russian SJ hill in World Cup calendar (pre-olympic competition in Sochi). Chronologically 4HT has been won by Gregor Schlierenzauer. Gold medals in World Ski Championships went to Anders Bardal, Kamil Stoch and Austria team (memorable Manuel Fettner one ski save). According to my rankings it was best season of lifetime for Jan Matura (CZE), Jaka Hvala (SLO) or Kaarel Nurmsalu (EST).

In this season best country jumpers will have ratings:
AUSTRIA - Gregor Schlierenzauer - 1600
NORWAY - Anders Bardal - 1590
SLOVENIA - Peter Prevc - 1570
GERMANY - Michael Neumayer - 1560
POLAND - Kamil Stoch - 1530
JAPAN - Taku Takeuchi - 1490
CZECHIA - Jan Matura - 1460
SWITZERLAND - Simon Ammann - 1400
RUSSIA - Dmitriy Vassiliev - 1310
BULGARIA - Vladimir Zografski - 1240
ITALY - Sebastian Colloredo - 1190
FRANCE - Vincent Descombes Sevoie - 1180
