Where to advertise? It could be on your own website / blog etc. My main concern is that if this kind of system was introduced people would start recklessly spamming their link to inappropriate places. This should not be the concern. Recommendation system is one of ways of an aggressive campaign :) ...

I really do like the idea for achievements in general. What I don't know is if the classic simple style of dsj will handle achievements without taking step towards generic steam game... "We" can always improve it to be not generic. Say what you want, but Mr J. has such a great taste when ...

Simpler.
In "fast" mode a calculation, in "watching" mode a simulation. First may be implemented earlier with no bigger problems I guess, second later.
